Lisa I don't think most people realize the cost of running a water heater are.  It is probably the single highest energy user in the house.

Wondering if one could save more by switching to tankless water heater. But then, the question into play would be electric vs gas.

I plan to go tankless next time and just heat the water I need hot with an on demand system.  But we have the timer and shut it off when we're away, both helping with efficency.
