An Attitude Question - Are You A 1, 2 or 3?

Ask yourself, which man (woman) are you?

One of my favorite quotes from Charles M. Schwab:

Three men were laying brick.

The first was asked: “What are you doing?”

He answered: “laying some brick.”

The second man was asked: “what are you working for?”

He answered: “Five dollars a day.”

The third man was asked: “What are you doing?”

He answered: “I am helping to build a great cathedral.”

Which man are you?

Too many times we get caught up in the “daily grind” and go through the motions of what is needed to be done.  Don’t let yourself forget the big picture.  Examine what you want to accomplish, review your goals…and if you have none, stop and take the time to write them.  How else can you achieve if you have nothing to strive for?

Charles M. Schwab

Charles Michael Schwab was an American steel magnate. Under his leadership, Bethlehem Steel became the second largest steel maker in the United States, and one of the most important heavy manufacturers in the world.

I like looking at the big picture, too. This makes a great point, Lisa.

Hi Lisa

Love this post. I like to focus on the big picture, but if I have to I don't forget those details.

Hi Lisa -

Yes, sometimes the mundane tasks take our focus off the big picture. Thanks for the reminder.

Good morning Lisa - it is so important to look at the big picture.  In business that starts with Vision, Values, and Mission.

Morning Lisa.

When building a cathedral or an agency, one must not forget even the most mundane steps are the building blocks to achieve the goals we set out to accomplish

Hi Sheila.  Some days I'm laying bricks while on others I'm selling a cathedral.

To be totally honest, Lisa, I'm not any of those men, as I'm a woman! And much as Gabe Sanders said... my goal might be to build a cathedral but there are those days when it's just laying the bricks! And nothing wrong with as you need those bricks laid to accomplish the cathedral.

Good morning Lisa. I love this and I think I am number three. At least I hope so.

Lisa what a fantastic world would this be if we had more of worker number three.

Hi Lisa, Thanks for sharing this story.  I would find it very difficult to work if I didn't have the big picture in mind.

Great quote by Charles M. Schwab;  we definitely can get caught up in the daily grind and lose sight of the true goal.  "...I'm helping to build a great cathedral" --- - beautiful!
