This week marks 17 years since the 9/11 terror attacks, and in memory of the 40 lives lost aboard United Flight 93 – which crashed into an open field in Shanksville, Pa. – a one-of-its-kind memorial has been erected in Somerset County.

Called the “Tower of Voices” and located at the already-existing Flight 93 Memorial, the $6 million project – financed by the National Park Foundation – stands at around 93 feet tall and is the embodiment of a musical instrument holding 40 wind chimes, honoring the 40 victims.

According to the U.S National Park Service, the “intent is to create a set of 40 tones that can signify through consonance the serenity and nobility of the site while also through dissonance recalling the event that consecrated the site.”

9/11 AFTER 15 YEARS: THOSE WHO WERE THERE REMEMBER

Moreover, the “C” shape of the tower enables sound to echo externally from the open side in a fan-shaped arrangement. The chimes are wind activated and have internal strikers attached to sails protruding from the base of each chime.

“It’s the first visible memorial feature that you see as you enter, so it’s like a welcoming beacon or a landmark that introduces the memorial to the visitors,” architect Paul Murdoch told reporters ahead of Sunday’s dedication ceremony. “It’s not just an emotional memorial for those of us who have lived through it, especially those who lost ones, but something that needs to be here to tell the story of what happened.”

What a wonderful structure, Lisa and so creative and thoughtful. I love the idea in its entirety - it's definitely not like any other.

Ray & I were talking about that this afternoon - neither of us can believe it's been 17 years; it still feels like yesterday.

Very nicely done and designed. Watching the coverage this morning of the reading of the names. A young man who worked for me in retail years ago was killed in the first building.

I agree Debe Maxwell, CRS this is a stunning Memorial and I love the wind chime details.  So hard to believe the tragedy was 17 years ago, seems like only yesterday.

Lisa, we had an office meeting today and our manager had a five minute video about this tower and a minute of it was with the Architect, after seeing your post last night and today being 9/11 it was even more powerful that my manager used this sad event to commemorate this day.... then he had  added usually as a manager he does not like to start a meeting on a sad note...and changed it up after it...it was very touching, Endre

Was in Cincinnati at the annual Ohio Realtors convention taking a CE class when this all happened 17 years ago.  About half of us were watching tv's that they brought into the hallways for people to see what was happening.  Would like to visit this site. Happy to know that President Trump was there this year. Will look on UTube for a video to hear the chimes.

Thanks for your post, Lisa!

I didn't know a single soul who died that day, but did know some who did. I still feel very personally touched.  The fact that my family has a paramedic/nurse, firefighters, law enforcement officer makes it even more personal.  Their "work family" becomes family and I'm heartbroken on a personal level for each soul that died, was injured or suffered that day and any other day when those who help are harmed by evil.

This memorial is just stunning and I'm proud of it and proud of the way we can come together as a nation.

Thank you for sharing the rendering of the memorial.  Having never seen it, it's interesting to read about the design and the intent behind it.  Every time I think of this 3rd plane, the main memory that comes to mind is, "Let's do this."
